Tiny Devotional for Wednesday, 12-09-2020

A great good morning to all my friends and neighbors in Internet Land! And, to family members who have dropped by, stretch before exercise.

Wisdom has built her house,
She has carved out her seven pillars;
She has prepared her food, she has mixed her wine;
She has also set her table;
She has sent out her attendants, she calls out
From the tops of the heights of the city:
Proverbs 9:1-3, NASB

I was hoping to find something in this morning’s reading to encourage Alicia Ann not to go out into the cold without a jacket. It’s ROTC uniform day, they didn’t have a jacket in her size, so, she walked outside in sub-freezing weather in short sleeves. She DID comply with my direct instruction, though.
(Maybe that matches up with the next verse: “Whoever is naive, let him turn in here!”)

But I picked verses 1-3. I wanted to talk about the seven pillars.

Rule 1 of Biblical interpretation: don’t get weird.

There are LOTS of sources happy to tell you what the seven pillars ARE. Some of them are even based on specific citations in the bible, and there isn’t anything WRONG with the characteristics listed.

HOWEVER!

We have a plain-sense interpretation, which is that SEVEN is the number of perfection.

The other characteristic of the pillars is that they are carved (or hewn).  Stone, probably, as the other OT uses of the word, save one, involve stone. The exception is Agag, who Samuel hewed to pieces before the LORD at Gilgal.

SO: Wisdom built her house on a perfect foundation: strong, and immovable (unlike a tent).

Do you believe truth depends on the times? Go talk to Wisdom; you will probably come away better than Agag did.
Probably.

Peace be on your household.
