A great good morning to all my friends and neighbors in Internet Land! And to family members who have dropped by, I need to buy groceries.

Poor is one who works with a lazy hand,
But the hand of the diligent makes rich.

Proverbs 10:4, NASB

“That’s a big 10-4, good buddy.”
Probably no one under 50 will understand that reference. You see, before the internet, there was a pre-existing world-wide-web of rednecks with CB radios.
Enough of that.

In a prior career, I had the chance to address incoming college freshmen. I told them that they were just beginning a great period of fun, fellowship, and freedom, and hopefully a great period of learning as well. I also told them that it would never be this easy again. So, I begged them: do the academic work to keep the fun happening.

I believe everyone who reads these words can look back at a time when their life was easier. Maybe not everyone wasted those opportunities, but they can at least recognize that waste was a possibility. And, while it’s absolutely the case that some of us are born into better circumstances than others, this truth faces us all:

Work works.

Sloth doesn’t.

No matter where we are when we start, how much we achieve is largely dependent on how much effort we put into it. That’s a matter of using the brains and brawn we are given, to achieve the opportunities available to us.

What’s true for a person is also true for a society. Most of our efforts rightly go to improving our own condition, but we must NEVER forget to take advantage of opportunities to improve conditions for everyone.

It’s the best thing we can do for our grandchildren.

Peace be on your household.
