A great good morning to all my friends and neighbors in Internet Land! And to family members who have dropped by, the dogs still fear the cats.

A fool rejects his father’s discipline,
But he who regards reproof is sensible.
Proverbs 15:5, NASB

The parallel construction of the verse links two words, which in this translation are 'DISCIPLINE' and ‘REPROOF.’ They do NOT mean the same thing!

Discipline. The Hebrew word translated here as ‘discipline’ is מוּסָר (musar), and it’s most often rendered as ‘instruction.’ It’s related to the word meaning ‘transfer’ or ‘pass,’ as when you ’pass’ the basketball.

Worst parenting statement EVER:
“DAISNAID”
(Do As I Say, Not As I Do)

I don’t know who first came up with that stupid phrase, but I wish they hadn’t. If you’ve never heard it, count yourself lucky; if you’ve ever SAID it, then repent immediately! It places you in opposition to the clear meaning of every good teaching found anywhere. It’s a simple concept: you can’t give away something you don’t have.

In the first half of this verse, the father of the fool offers as a gift something he has paid for, but the fool rejects it. DAISNAID offers something that HASN’T been paid for, so it’s either stolen goods or garbage. No wonder it’s rejected, right? So, eliminate DAISNAID!

Reproof. The Hebrew word translated as ‘reproof’ is תּוֹכֵחָה (to-kay-kha), and it ONLY means ‘correction;’ something bad has to happen before this word is used.

And that means that the sensible person had to mess up, first; otherwise, they would have been no reason for a reproof.

So, if someone doesn’t make mistakes, you can’t conclude they are wise.

You need to know how they responded when told to go cut a switch.

Peace be on your household.

  1. Yes, Amen my Brother Pat, discipline and reproof may not mean the same thing but this will help if the person makes mistake. With discipline and reproof a person may learn from his mistake. Praise God my Brother Pat!
