Tiny Devotional for Sunday, 07-30--2023

A great good morning to all my friends and neighbors in Internet Land! And to family members who have dropped by, we have either Pad Thai or fried rice for lunch.

There is a kind of man* whose teeth are like swords
And his jaw teeth like knives,
To devour the afflicted from the earth
And the needy from among men.

Proverbs 30:14, NASB

*I’ve been reading this wrong. The Hebrew word NASB translates as kind of man is דּוֹר (dor), and most versions translate it as ‘generation;’ it’s not referring to ONE person (which is what I thought), but a type of people.

The afflicted and needy don’t have much worth taking, so the motivation for Kind-Of-Man (KOM) has to be something other than simple theft.
My years immersed in detective work (I watched Law & Order) tell me to ask: “Who benefits from attacking the afflicted and needy?”

I don’t like the answers I come up with, because they reek of cynical tyranny in the form of gulags; concentration camps; killing fields; trails of tears; ethnic cleansing; genocide; all overlaid with a lust for power. Research it, if you want details, and are able to guard your heart.

HOWEVER!

You and I are not helpless. KOM can only prevail in an environment of fear, and THAT is something we are well equipped to overcome:

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses.
II Corinthians 10:3-4, NASB

Destroy the fortress of fear with LOVE, starting with this prayer:

“Open our eyes, Lord.”

Then, O best beloved, you WILL discover what you need to do next.

Peace be on your household.

  1. Yes my Brother Pat, that's a wonderful start of prayer, To open ones eyes. To behold and see with love and destroy the fortress of fear and let us equip ourselves to overcome fear.
