Tiny Devotional for Saturday, 04-13-2024

A great good morning to all my friends and neighbors in Internet Land! And to family who might drop by, banana bread and GREAT coffee.

Wealth obtained by fraud dwindles,
But the one who gathers by labor increases it.

Proverbs 13:11, NASB

“Did you ever have a favorite shirt, one that you feel so groovy in?
You don't even mind if it starts to fade; that only makes it lovelier still!”
Donovan, “I Love My Shirt”

A shirt can be a form of wealth, as anyone who has ever owned a favorite shirt can confirm. It's not a simple function of the purchase price, although that may be a minor factor. Mostly, what contributes to the value of the shirt comes from memories associated with the shirt. Others may not value it, but you do.

That also applies to money, the form of wealth implied in this verse. You've heard the expression 'Easy come, easy go.' It's true; if you have very little invested  in some money, you are far more likely to waste it on trivial things.

But if you have to earn the money: THAT'S DIFFERENT! It may take a while for this to develop; all of my kids originally thought that their money would burn a hole in their pockets if they didn't spend it right away.

Here's a a secret: this applies to other forms of wealth, other than coin. Wisdom, in fact, is the most valuable form of wealth I know of.

Experience, a painful teacher, brings us wisdom we will appreciate. It would be GREAT if we grew wise just from what we read, or were told, but the wisdom we cherish? It comes from getting stomped in the ground.

May we grow wise in peace today!

Peace be on your household.
