Tiny Devotional for Sunday, 05-05-2024
A great good morning to all my friends and neighbors in Internet Land! And to family who might drop by, it's my birthday, and I'm forced to write about a harlot.
And embrace the bosom of a foreigner?
Proverbs 5:20, NASB
I don't want to write about this verse on my birthday, but there are three reasons why I'm doing it:
1. Shortly after I started this blog, I realized that if I didn't discipline myself to write about the verses in sequence, I would find myself skipping verses. That's a lousy way to read the Bible. It's better to write about the unpleasant things, as well as the pleasant.
2. Harlots are mentioned, but in a negative sense. It's not like I'm asking for a hooker for my birthday present; the verse says “DON'T DO THAT!” It's a MORAL verse. By including it, I'm teaching that hanging with adulteresses is a BAD thing.
3. If I skipped over the verses that explicitly name a sin, and speak against it, then I am implicitly giving approval by ignoring the warnings.
Still, I'm not going to start wailing about sin, in person or on social media posts. For one thing, I think that's hard to do well, without boring your intended audience. Some use humor to call out sin (looking at YOU, Babylon Bee), but there's a problem: sometimes, what they mock isn't strictly sin, as much as it is partisan politics. Other times, they seem to have selected clothing or hair styles to mock.
I could TRY their approach, but do I really want to call out sin, if it's just a fashion preference?
Sounds judgmental, to me; YMMV.
Peace be on your household.
Great post! Happy birthday!
