A great good morning to all my friends and neighbors in Internet Land! And to family members who have dropped by, chicken or croissant?

Accept my instruction and not silver,
And knowledge rather than choice gold.
For wisdom is better than jewels;
And all desirable things cannot compare with her.

Proverbs 8:10-11

Singing Love Songs to the Beloved

Late 80s-early 90s, this verse inspired a popular chorus:
“Lord, You are more precious than silver.
Lord, You are more costly than gold,
Lord, You are more beautiful than diamonds
And nothing I desire compares with You.”
Beautiful song, expressing adoration of the Almighty.

One day, our pastor suggested a change, which would reflect our care for each other, as well as God’s attitude toward us:
“Sister (or Brother) you are more precious than silver,
And nothing God desires compares with you.”
Good theology, pleasant to sing; our congregation adopted that verse as well.
Our congregation; not the whole world.
Sometime later, a lovely lady was speaking at a men’s retreat. I herded a lovely trio of men/musicians/chefs to her dressing room, bringing her a lovely salad.
I lead them in that chorus;  and halfway-through, their faces twisted, breaking out in sweat, because
They didn’t know that version, and
They thought they were about to sing to this saintly woman of their desire for her.
Even with the best intentions, sometimes there are unintended consequences. What do you do?
You sing LOUD.
At least, that’s what I did on this occasion, and it worked. It drowned out their quavering voices, and gave them direction.
Which they joyfully followed, not wanting to sound like a trio of lechers.
Unintended consequences are inevitable. If they happen a LOT, though, you might consider rehearsing.

Peace be on your household.

  1. Sometimes you have to baffle them with your overwhelming enthusiasm and make them ignore the fact that you have no idea what is going on.
The great beauty of knowledge is that it brings greater returns than any investment.
